Playwright and Spider-Man, Turn Off the Dark's co-author Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa is set to join TV's Glee as a co-producer and writer, according to Deadline.com. Aguirre-Sacasa will also pen the screenplay for a film remake of Stephen King's Carrie for MGM and Screen Gems. The new version is expected to remain more faithful to King's 1974 novel than the original 1976 film.
Aguirre-Sacasa was brought on to Spider-Man, alongside director Phillip William McKinley, earlier this year to rework the book by original co-authors Glen Berger and Julie Taymor. Aguirre-Sacasa's plays include Good Boys and True and Based on a Totally True Story. He also adapted King's 1978 novel The Stand into a graphic novel.
The 1976 film adaptation of Carrie earned Oscar nominations for stars Sissy Spacek and Piper Laurie. The film, which follows a telekinetic teenager who uses her powers to seek revenge on her cruel high school peers, was followed by a 1999 sequel, The Rage: Carrie 2. The novel was also adapted into a 2002 made-for-television film. In 1988 Carrie was reimagined as a Broadway musical, featuring a score by Michael Gore and Dean Pitchford. The show became a notorious flop and closed after five performances. A reworked version is set to play off-Broadway during MCC Theatre's 2011-2012 season.
After a three-week hiatus, Spider-Man resumed performances on May 12 and will officially open on June 14 at the Foxwoods Theatre.
